Kalighat Temple, Kolkata
Kalighat temple is the biggest only Lordless Maa Kali temple of India. It is in the Kalighat of Kolkata West Bengal. It is one of the 51 shakti Peethas of India.
Shakti Peethas are the place where part of Mata Sati's body is said to have fallen. In the course, she has jumped in the havan kund in the revolt of disrespect of his husband (Lord Shiva). It is said that the toes of her right foot have fallen here.
Kalighat was a ghat on the banks of the river Hooghly situated in Kolkata, West Bengal. The temple is only 200 years old, though it was composed several times. The present structure of the temple was completed under Sabarna Roy Chowdhury in 1809. He was a kali devotee himself, he started the construction of the temple in1798. The idol of Maa Kali in the temple is very unique and different it does not follow the pattern of other Maa Kali idols in the temples of Bengal. Kalighat is also considered one of the most auspicious temples of India.
