Maa Kamakhya Temple is situated at Nilachal hills in Guwahati, Assam. It is dedicated to the goddess Kamakhya(Devi Durga). This temple is famous for its tantric practices. This temple is the center of the Kulachara Tantra Marga and also the site of the Amvubachi mela. The mela is like a festival that celebrates the menstruation of the goddess. The temple is built according to the local style of the Nilachal hills known as the Nilachal type. It is the primary and one of the oldest among the 51 Shakti Peethas of India. It is also an important pilgrimage of the people from West Bengal. The Kalika Purana states that Kamakhya maa fulfils all desires of the devotees. She is also the bride of Lord shiva(Maa Parvati) who gives salvation. The Devi is mainly offered flowers but during Tantric puja, it might include animals sacrifices. There are many annual celebrations one of them is Manasha Puja. There is a five-day celebration in Navratri which attracts several thousand visitors. In this temple, Mata is worshipped in non - iconic and anthropoid form of a stone shaped like a yoni and fed by a perennial stream. Maa Kamakhya is said to have 10 arms and six heads. Each head with a third eye. She is wearing heavy jewellery and red flower mostly Hibiscus. Each of the 10 hands holds a lotus, Trishul, sword, bell, chakra, bow, arrow, goad, shield and club or scepter. Her remaining two hands hold a bowl, one made of gold and the other made of a skull. She is sitting on a lotus, directly on top of Lord Shiva.
