Located atop Jakhoo Hill, the Jakoo Temple is a sacred place for the Hindu community of India. It is dedicated to the Hindu Monkey God, Lord Hanuman. The hill is situated 3 km from the Ridge at a height of 2,455 m above sea level and is Shimla's highest peak. From the hill, visitors can enjoy wonderful picturesque views of the Shivalik Ranges and its sister town of Sanjauli. The 110 feet tall idol of Lord Hanuman located at the top of the hill is the biggest attraction for tourists at Shimla.
Legend and myth suggest that the monkey Lord Hanuman rested here while on his search for the Sanjivini Booti (a kind of herb). He met sage Yaaku on the hilltop and then moved ahead in his journey. It is also believed that the sage built this temple. Devotees from all over the country come here.
The Temple itself is colourfully painted with images of Lord Hanuman decorated to the outer walls of the temple. Inside there is a statue of the Monkey God along with it is a religious smell of burning incense. On the outer wall of the temple is a religious bell, if a visitor to the temple rings the bell the ringer will have good luck for the following 3 days. Jakoo Temple is a trek from the Shimla Mall which is quite a ride.
A Sign-Board at the entrance to Jakhoo hill on Ridge road had an "Age/Time-limit chart" for trekkers to judge their physical fitness in climbing to the peak of this hill approx. 2 Kms from the Ridge, akin to a "Height/Weight chart" used at Gymnasiums. Insurance against monkeys who might follow you for food is a stick which you might pick up while on the trek. A newly constructed 33-meter statue of Lord Hanuman has been positioned next to the temple. The Hanuman statue has been painted a vivid orange colour and when viewed from Shimla this large statue can be seen towering above the natural greens of the pine tree canopy.
