DESCRIPTION

The holy temple in Vrindavan city is dedicated to Shri Krishna; it is one amongst a list of seven temples of Him here.

Constructed in the year 1860 and refurbished in 1921, it exhibits an amazing example of Rajasthani architectural design. The frontage of pillars and arches give the 3-storeyed structure a unique look.

It is said that Shri Banke Bihari Ji was earlier present for veneration at Nidhivan, near Vrindavan; His idol was found there by the renowned Krishna Bhakt (devotee), spiritual poet and classical musician, Swami Haridas Ji, a follower of Nimbarka Sampraday (following Vaishnavism).

Banke is translated as 'bent', and Bihari as 'enjoyer'. His idol is seen in Tribhanga stance playing his favourite flute; the right knee is bent over the left one, right hand is curved to grip the flute, and the head is a little inclined; hence the name!

During Janmashtami, a huge number of devotees visit here.
