DESCRIPTION

Baba Baidyanath Dham, Deoghar is a famous temple not only in Jharkhand; it is held in high esteem and reverence. Deoghar lies at a distance of about 250 km from Patna. The ancient temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlings in the country; it faces East. A stone structure with a towering shikhar (spire), 72 ft high, it's top showcases three gold containers. As is said, Lanka King Ravan, carrying Lord Shiva (Baba Baidyanath) had taken a break here, thus dishonouring the commitment of a non-stop passage; due to this, he was unsuccessful in taking the Lord to Lanka who established Himself here.

During Shravan month, a very large number of pilgrims undertake the strenuous 100 km journey on foot, carrying holy Ganga water from Ajgaibinath (Sultanganj) to Baba Dham; they offer araghya i.e pouring this water on the Shivalingam to worship Lord Shiva. The pilgrimage is understood to have been completed after devotees pay obeisance at Baba Basukinath Temple also, out 43 km away. There are twelve other shrines, dedicated to various gods within the complex.
