DESCRIPTION

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple is considered to be the holiest Hindu temple devoted to Lord Shiva; it is situated in the city of Varanasi on the Western side of River Ganga. It finds mention in various Hindu scriptures since olden times.
The chief deity is called as Vishwanath/ Vishveshvar in Sanskrit and translates to 'Monarch of the whole Universe'. It is said that even if one looks at the temple one gets liberated from the cycle of birth and death (Moksha / Salvation). Varanasi city is also called as Kashi.
The present structure of the temple was constructed by Maharani Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar of Indore in the 18th century. Its golden 'Shikhar' (spire) rises high in the sky and is visible from afar.

There are umpteen shops outside the premises which sell various articles used in rites and rituals.
The temple is thronged by devotees since early morning every day; further, it is most visited during the Hindu festivals of Mahashivratri and Sawan month (July-August). Certainly a must-visit.
